Medical Hair Loss

There are a variety of medical causes for hair loss. These include:

Alopecia

Alopecia is the general medical term for a spectrum of conditions which result in temporary or permanent hair loss, such as:

  • Alopecia Areata – an autoimmune disorder where the body’s own immune system destroys the individual’s hair follicles
  • Alopecia Totalis another rare disorder which causes loss of all hair on the scalp
  • Alopecia Universalis – a rare disorder which causes hair loss over the entire body
  • Androgenetic Alopecia – also known as male pattern baldness, this condition accounts for more than 95% of hair loss in men. While more than 60% of men experience some degree of hair loss by their mid-thirties and more than 80% of men have thinning hair by age 50, up to 25% begin to experience hair loss in their teens. This condition may also affect women: up to 40% of women experience significant hair loss by the age of 40.

According to the American Hair Loss Association, both men and women find that hair loss affects their sense of physical and emotional well-being and may experience detrimental impact on personal and professional relationships. For these people, hair restoration or replacement, done with proper evaluation and expertise, can be life-changing.

Chemotherapy

Cancer treatments, including chemotherapy and radiation, can cause temporary hair loss. Depending on the nature and scope of the treatment, most hair will grow back once treatment is over. However, hair follicles may be dormant for several months or slow to regrow hair.

Medication-Induced Hair Loss

A number of very necessary medications such as blood thinners, blood pressure medications, anti-inflammatory drugs, hormone replacements and antidepressants may cause hair loss. You should discuss your concerns with your doctor.

Solutions for Medical or Normal Hereditary Hair Loss

Depending on the nature and degree of your hair loss, and your lifestyle, we can discuss options such as our custom NEW HAIR ALIVE™ solution, available as a full or partial prosthesis; our Micro-Silo skin based prostheses and wigs look and feel like your own hair. We can also create a frontal hairline reconstruction with the latest ULTRA MICRO LACE and NEW HAIR ALIVE™ systems: these are non-surgical, undetectable and a great option for those whose condition is ongoing.
